thank you for joining us today. tell us about your background. >> my parents immigrated to the united states in the 1960's. i was the first kid born in the u.s. my parents sacrificed everything so that their kids could have the opportunities that they wanted when they came here. i grew up in the boston area and lived in different parts of boston. i went to catholic price school in dorchester, a section of boston. -- i went to catholic high school in dorchester, a section of boston. because of my parents, my brothers and i were all blessed to go to harvard university. that is where i went to school. it was intense. i stayed there for law school and have a master's in public policy from there. those are subjects i decided to study because i was interested in public service and public policy issues and government. >> you grew up in the boston area. what made you want to make the transition and moved to san francisco? what motivated you to get involved in politics question marks before i ran for office, and worked in sa

an etf you're recommending to us. do you think high yield does not equate a good choice as far as the stock goes? >> if you're getting high yield, that is a higher strategy. if you're owning several hundred companies inside of an etf with the high yield, that is a different proposition. cheryl: an etf, do you have a specific etf you like that you are geared towards right now? we will get more specific than that. >> we don't recommend one specific one but the advisors have been looking at higher-yielding part of the market. looking at u.s. large-cap, quality portfolios with yields north of where the s&p is. if you can pay 3%, that is terrific for treasuries only paying about 1.6. cheryl: it seems small businesses, small cap kind of a bias against them right now. >> typically they be better coming out of recession or when there is demand. the new stronger growth rate in the u.s. a pickup, personal income, most of the small caps will not benefit from what is going on. cheryl: we were looking at it was fascinating to watc

to want to be like us. it is so bad now that while our university systems are still where they should be in terms of reputation, no one from other countries wants to send their kids over here to go through our k-12 schools. we are at the point now where what we need to seriously look at is what it will take to change the dynamic. in recent days, we heard about the teachers' strike. i think the big challenge we have is we put ourselves in these partisan boxes and we force people to take sides. you know the side that is never adequately represented in these discussions is kids. i just posted on my blog, how will a teachers strike in chicago help kids? after getting all of these responses from people who love teachers, are mad at teachers, i had 40 people immediately respond and no one can answer the question. teachers do not want to have the evaluations. or the 10 year issue. the teachers want to make sure the first ones who are hired are the ones who are laid off, where some of the ones who are laid off will
